Acclaimed composer and multi-instrumentalist Barend Tromp returns with his third solo album, Odd Time Concepts, a fearless exploration of rhythmic complexity and creative expression. Released on 7D Media—the visionary label founded by King Crimson alumnus Trey Gunn—the album features eleven dynamic instrumental tracks that venture far beyond conventional time signatures.
From the familiar pulse of 3/4 to the adventurous terrain of 13/16 and 21/8, Odd Time Concepts challenges expectations while maintaining a powerful sense of groove and accessibility. Tromp is joined by an impressive lineup of four drummers, including progressive rock icon Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Stick Men), whose performances anchor the album’s intricate rhythms with power and finesse.
Trey Gunn also makes a notable appearance with a soaring Warr guitar solo on the track “Madhuvanti,” adding a distinct textural dimension to the project. Throughout the album, Tromp’s bass-driven compositions showcase his command of unconventional structure and melody, offering a fresh and emotionally resonant perspective on contemporary instrumental music.
“Odd Time Concepts is about stretching musical boundaries without alienating the listener,” says Tromp. “It’s a conversation between complexity and groove.”
With each release, Barend Tromp continues to redefine what’s possible within instrumental and progressive music. Odd Time Concepts is available now on all major streaming platforms and through 7D Media.
