Rooted in Reflection: A Temple of Trees by Andrew Keeling & Alex Che Johnson
There are albums that speak, and there are albums that listen. A Temple of Trees, the new collaboration between composer Andrew Keeling and musician-producer Alex Che Johnson, quietly does both — inviting listeners into a world of stillness, memory, and reverence for the natural world.
After relocating to Ireland in 2018, Keeling found himself deeply moved by the landscapes surrounding him. In response, he began composing a series of intimate, lyrical piano pieces — sketches of misty mornings, windblown fields, and fleeting recollections of his native England. Meanwhile, Alex Che Johnson had been exploring his own piano-based compositions, similarly rooted in personal experience and quiet introspection.
When the two met in 2023, it became clear that their musical voices shared a common language — one of restraint, warmth, and depth. A Temple of Trees emerged from this creative meeting point: twelve short pieces, each a meditation in miniature, produced by Johnson with care and clarity.
The album flows like a walk through a forest — sometimes dappled in light, sometimes shadowed, always grounded in a sense of place and presence. With its spacious arrangements and heartfelt performances, A Temple of Trees offers a refuge for the listener — a sonic sanctuary where memory and landscape intertwine.
