Andre LaFosse - Celestial Jukebox: Six-String Mixtape Volume 5
"Six-String Mixtapes" are an ongoing anthology of live, in-studio, guitar + looper solo performances. This edition is much more ambient, meditative, and textural than previous installments. Some of it is still highly rhythmic, but in ways more indebted to minimalism and "pattern music," rather than hip-hop and DJ culture.
Obligatorily ridiculous (and ridiculously obligatory) live looping flex: These are live performances, with very little editing after the fact. Some of the tracks have the beginning and/or end chopped off, and the last track is two sections of the same performance spliced together.
Beyond the basic live guitar tone (probably heard most clearly at the beginning of "Red Giant"), all of the sounds here come from the Soma Laboratories Cosmos "anti-looper." There are no external reverbs or other effects, and all of the stereo imaging is as it originated from the Cosmos. (Speaking of which: headphones are highly recommended for this one.) There's standard-issue EQ/compression/saturation stuff added in the mixing and mastering, to sweeten the overall picture, but the fundamental sound is what went down live.
